I don’t have as many followers as Jasmine, but that has not stopped me from doing business with people who I have met on social platforms. In fact, in recent years almost all of my clients are people who I engage with on social platforms, because I use social media to Build RELATIONSHIPS.

It is so tempting to get swept up in vanity metrics — the number of likes, followers, etc.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But don’t let your numbers discourage you. The truth is you don’t need a TON of followers to reach your goals. You need the right followers, the ones who resonate with your brand and your message, the ones who loyally follow you and who support you and engage with you in a meaningful way.

You need relationships.
Because relationships lead to business.
This is how I have always gotten clients and business — from people who I know and like and who like and trust me.

Relationships take time — I don’t care where you start them, …. whether it’s in a facebook group or another social media platform, or if you meet someone in person at an event or party. Sure, sometimes you can instantly exchange business with someone you just met, but usually the cultivation of the relationship TAKES TIME. It takes time to know someone and build trust, for both of you to develop the confidence in each other so that when you have the solution to their problem, they ask you to help them solve it.

And how do you do that in social media? The secret is ENGAGEMENT: liking posts, commenting in a way that provides your unique insight and value, showing support, humor even when it’s appropriate.

Engagement is more art than science. But that is what makes the difference. Let your authentic personality shine through in your posts. Show up regularly. Be consistent. That’s how you build relationships online.
