I went to see the Norm Clasen exhibit at m+b gallery on Cahuenga in #Hollywood last night, super curious about the #copyright issue arising from Richard Prince’s appropriation of these very images of Norm’s work, which are also being exhibited at #LACMA right now. I was intrigued as a horsewoman, photographer and lawyer.
Norm is awesome, and his work is iconic and beautiful. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m no copyright expert, but I think there has to be a limit to when appropriation is blatant theft of another artist’s work or ideas. If I photographed this image when it was part of a Marlboro Ad and simply removed the ad copy, I don’t believe it’s right to call it “mine.” Do you? That is what Richard Prince is doing. That is crossing the line. It’s stealing. Especially when Prince did nothing to add to or detract from the original image. @mbphotogallery
